GLUCOMETER CLEANING & DISINFECTION UPDATE:

1.  According to CMS F-441, Infection Control, glucometers are classified as as a “Semi-Critical Item" as well as thermometers, electric razors….

2.  Individual single resident use glucometers need to remain in the resident's room in a separate container which will may include test strips and control solutions.

Clean the glucometers using an Alcohol Prep pad (70% isopropyl alcohol) and periodic disinfection with 1:10 bleach solution, prepared within 24 hours of use or a commercially prepared bleach wipe containing the same dilution.

(Follow manufacturer guidelines for cleaning and disinfecting).

A secure and/or locked container within the resident’s room may be required to safely store the glucometers, test strips and control solutions, especially for cognitively impaired residents.

3.  Multi-use glucometers must be cleaned and disinfected with a 1:10 bleach solution or commercially prepared bleach wipe with the same dilution, before and after each use.  The 1:10 bleach solution must be prepared within 24 hours of use.
